形似鲈鱼,但肉质略粗糙,体色发暗,灰褐并带有紫绿色,腹部灰白。背鳍鳍棘上缘黑色,鳍条部中央有一纵行黑色条纹。胸鳍腋部上方有一晴斑。其余各鳍灰黑色。米鱼体形为两侧扁平向后延长状,背、腹部浅弧形。鱼鳔可制鱼胶,有较高的药用价值;鱼鳞可制鳞胶;内脏、骨可制鱼粉、鱼油。
